Welcome to the Breathe CrossFit Podcast! I’m Toni Roy, and with me today is my husband, Eli Roy. This is our first podcast together, and while the intro was a challenge, we’re finally rolling. With the holidays wrapping up, we’re reflecting on traditions and talking about New Year’s resolutions.
Holiday Traditions
Eli shared that his Christmas traditions involved waking up super early to see if Santa had come. After opening presents with his family, they’d spend the day at his grandparents’ house with extended family. In my family, Christmas Eve was spent at family friends’ house, enjoying Italian food and staying up late. On Christmas morning, we’d open gifts—but only after my dad showered, which was torturous for me as a kid. Later, we’d head to my grandparents’ house, where my grandfather made Eggs Benedict, a special tradition I always loved. For New Year’s Eve, Eli’s family kept things low-key, while my mom made it a tradition to stay home, avoiding the risks of being out on the roads. We’d make cheeseburgers, fries, and dip, then stay up to watch the ball drop and shout “Happy New Year!” out the door. Since Eli and I started dating, our holiday plans have become more flexible. This year, we celebrated Christmas Eve at Eli’s sister’s house and Christmas Day with both sides of our family, enjoying great food and good company.
Reflecting on New Year’s Resolutions
New Year’s resolutions often spark a lot of debate. Eli and I agree that resolutions can be valuable if they’re realistic and specific. Setting unachievable goals can lead to frustration, so breaking them into smaller, manageable steps is key. For example, I’ve had success setting goals like running a 5K each month for a year. It kept me active during the winter and gave me a reason to get outside. When setting goals, we recommend using the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Eli’s advice is to focus on goals that align with your “why” and to keep track of progress. Whether it’s fitness, nutrition, or personal growth, small, consistent steps lead to big changes.
Coaching and Business Goals for 2025
As coaches, we’re constantly working to improve. Eli’s focus is on providing more feedback during workout conditioning segments, while my goal is to enhance the teaching portion of classes and streamline setup so members can focus on learning and progressing. From a business perspective, one of our priorities is consistency with quarterly goal reviews for members. Checking in regularly helps members stay motivated, set new goals, and celebrate their progress. On the operations side, we plan to finish painting the ID side of the gym, replace older equipment, and improve the flooring to better serve our community.
