If you’ve ever wondered what those first few days after giving birth really feel like, here’s my story. Our daughter, Hailey, arrived early but healthy. The adrenaline of birth wore off quickly, and then came the real work—healing, feeding, learning, and feeling all the emotions at once.
At the hospital, I expected exhaustion, but not the wave of hunger, pain management logistics, or emotional highs and lows that followed. Day two hit hard. Between sleeplessness, hormones dropping, and a crying newborn, I had a full meltdown. It wasn’t postpartum depression—it was postpartum reality. The nurses were kind and supportive every step of the way, but you always have to advocate for yourself. Ask for meds. Use the ice packs. Use the heating pads. You’re not weak—you’re recovering.
My husband, Eli, was incredible. He handled all diaper changes for the first week and made sure I was fed and hydrated. One of the best pieces of advice I got was, “You take care of the baby, and let your husband take care of you.” That mindset saved me from burnout.
Once home, things didn’t magically calm down. We picked up our dogs—and one of them had a seizure that first night. Welcome to parenthood. But even through tears, fear, and multiple overnight feedings, the gratitude was louder than the chaos.
Now that we’ve found a rhythm, my focus is on simple health goals:
💧 120 ounces of water per day (I sip through every nighttime feeding)
🚶♀️ 10,000 steps daily
🥗 Cooking at home more, less takeout
📊 Tracking my weight daily and watching for weekly trends—not perfection
The biggest lesson? You can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself—mentally and physically—isn’t selfish. It’s survival.
Whether you’re a mom, coach, or friend to one, I hope this story reminds you that every new mother’s experience is layered with beauty and struggle. There’s no “right” way to recover—just your way.
