Fat Loss Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated: Start Here

We all know the basic formula for fat loss: eat less and/or move more.
But knowing that doesn’t always make it easy.

What does make it hard is everything that comes after:

  • What should I eat?
  • How much should I eat?
  • When should I eat?
  • Should I cut carbs?
  • Do I need to track calories?

There is so much information out there that it can feel overwhelming—and honestly, pretty confusing.

And here’s the thing most people forget: food is not just food.
Emotions, habits, stress, routine, and lifestyle all play a role. That’s why what works for one person might not work for another.

So instead of chasing the “perfect” plan, here’s what I’ve found works best.

Start With the Basics (Before Anything Else)

At Breathe CrossFit, we talk a lot about what we call Basic Lifestyle Guidelines. These are the foundation—no matter what your goal is.

They include:

  • Sleep (quality and quantity)
  • Stress management
  • Water intake
  • Daily movement (not just workouts)
  • Quality of nutrition

Before worrying about macros, meal timing, or tracking apps, these basics need to be in place. If even one of these areas is significantly off, fat loss becomes much harder—and more frustrating.

Pick ONE Thing to Improve

This is where most people get stuck.

They try to:

  • Eat perfectly
  • Drink more water
  • Sleep more
  • Work out harder
  • Reduce stress
  • Track everything

…all at the same time.

That’s a recipe for burnout.

Instead, ask yourself:
“Which one of these could improve the most right now?”

Then focus on only that.

Start small. Make it realistic. Let it become a habit before adding anything else. Once it feels automatic, move on to the next thing.

This approach works because it’s sustainable.

Habits Take Time (And That’s Normal)

Real habits don’t form overnight.

They take:

  • Weeks
  • Months
  • Sometimes even years!

That doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re human.

Progress isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency over time and being willing to adjust instead of quitting when things feel hard.

The Most Important Part

Don’t stop trying.
Don’t give up on yourself.

And most importantly—reach out if you need help.

You don’t have to do this alone. If you’re stuck, confused, or frustrated, speak up. A simple conversation can save you months of spinning your wheels.

Fat loss doesn’t need to be extreme or complicated. Start with the basics, build one habit at a time, and keep going.
